Firing at a target so close to explosives doesn't seem... wise?
(Though I guess the idea is rather trading in "definitely getting blown up" for "just maybe getting blown up"?)

It sort of depends upon what kind of explosive it is and whether it needs a detonator cap to blow it or if it's more volatile. My guess is that he's using C4, or something similar, which is stable until detonated, and I don't believe a bullet would do it. In which case, the question is whether it was a dead man's switch or if he had a chance to push the button before losing his grip.

Somewhere there is a school where they train dedicated men and women with nerves of steel how to defuse these sorts of situations with minimal loss of life or limb.

Chuck has not been to that school.
